The Workshop Secret That Involves Your Kitchen
Published at : September 22, 2021
Often when thinking of an ideal workshop, the same things that make an ideal kitchen come to mind: great lighting, freedom of movement, and the ability to easily identity your essentials. These essentials can be easily located either because they're highly visible (e.g., open shelving), or because you have a designated place for those essentials, or both.
These same concept apply to a great workshop. And why wouldn't they? Both your kitchen and your workshop are your personal laboratories.
I have been organizing my workshop, and I would like to share what I did to keep (the workshop and) my tools organized. The first step was to build a (power) tool cabinet, with labels for each power tool. In this way, I’ll always know if a specific tool is missing / needs to be stored in its designated ‘parking spot.’
The second thing I did was create a larger ‘peg board’ than what I currently have. I know that there are fancier alternatives to a peg board, but I wanted to keep it simple, and I really like the idea of being able to visually identify the tools on the peg board.
Lastly, I added a whiteboard where I can easily make lists, create designs, and do my calculations.
