In the SAAF and SAG games alone, Nepal and India have faced each other 13 times. On December 22, 1993, it was Nepal's first historic victory against the Indian football team in which Nepal defeated India 6-5 on penalties to win the lone medal in the 1993 South Asian Games.

In the last minute of the match for Nepal, which was trailing 2-1, Mani Bikram Sah scored an excellent goal through a freekick and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Nepal defeated India 6-5 in a penalty shootout to win the only gold medal for the country in the South Asian Games. Former captain Raju Kazi Shakya played a very important role in Nepal's victory.

The Nepali football team had to wait for almost 20 years to win for the second time against the Indian team. On September 22, 2013, the Nepali football team entered the field with high morale defeating the strong Indian team by 2-1.
